Its eleven provinces are subdivided in a total of 1,562 comunes, ranging in population from Milan (1,256,211) to Morterone, near Lake Como, with only 33 inhabitants (2001 census).
Another important town is Monza (the Formula One circuit).
Lombardy borders the regions of Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Trentino-Alto Adige, and the country of Switzerland.
The region is named for the Lombards or Langobardi, who came to this region after the fall of the (western) Roman Empire. There was a close relationship between the Frankish, Bavarian and Lombard nobility for many centuries.
The current (October 2002) president of Lombardy is Roberto Formigoni.
Climate
A constant gentle climate is in the north of the Lombardy and near the Alps and the area of green valleys and deep blue seas. The average winter temperature in the valleys seldom drops below 6 degrees Celsius while in summer temperatures of 25-30 ° seem pleasant due to the typical breeze at the lakeside. A long winter phase is rare and there is a good chance for long continuous good snow conditions only as of approx. 1,800 m in winter. The temperatures hardly drop overnight in summer.
to top Lake of Garda (Lago di Garda or Lago di Benaco) is the biggest lake of Italy with an area of 369.98 square km, a length of 51.6 km, a width of 17.2 km, a circumference of 158.4 km and a depth of 346 meters.
The climate is definitely Mediterranean due to the situation. Different cultivation cultures are cared for around the lake: the wine in the north, olive trees in the north. One of the best known tourist places is Malcesine.
Lake of Garda lies in Upper Italy between the Alps and the Po plain, approx. 65 m above sea-level -- in the north of the region of Trentino, in the east of the region of Veneto and in the west of the Lombardy region. Consequently the three provinces Trento (the north), Verona (the east), Brescia (the west and the south) share themselves the administration commonly.

The Lago Maggiore (Lago Verbano, of the Latin Lacus Verbanus, German Langensee) is a 212,5 square km big lake and it is situated in the bordering area of Italy and the Swiss canton of Ticino. It goes from the southern Alps chain to the edge of the Po plain. Like the other upper Italian lakes he arose at the melt of ice-age glaciers. He is surrounded by high rock faces primarily in the northern part.
The lake level lies on average at 193 m above the Mediterranean. It is 66 km long and up to 10 km wide. The greatest depth is 372 m. So the lake bottom is over 170 m under the sea-level. The catchment area is 6’386 square km wide (3326 square km in Switzerland and 3060 square km in Italy).
Of the fishing in the Lago Maggiore live several professional fishermen.
Since 1826 there is a passenger shipping on the lake. The Navigazione Laghi Maggiore Garda Como runs a fleet of 25 ships today.
The feeder stream and outlet is the Tessin (Italian Ticino). Other feeders are the Maggia and the Toce.
Several islands are located in the lake, the Borromaic islands of (Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori) at Stresa are the three best known.
